Sicily & Sicilian Wine

Sicily is Italy’s southernmost region, and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

Blessed with consistently bright sunshine and reliably moderate rainfall, Sicily’s classic Mediterranean climate is ideally suited to the production of wine grapes.

Wine has been made in Sicily for millennia. There is evidence that Mycenaean traders cultivated grapes in the Aeolian Islands as early as 1,500 BC and when the Greeks began to settle in Sicily in the 8th century BC, they too introduced several varieties of vines. Sicily has more vineyards than any other Italian Wine Region: in fact, Sicily has 23 DOC zones and 1 DOCG.

The largest DOC by land area is Marsala on the West Coast.
